The history of La Perla dates back to the early 1970s. Almost by inertia, Gladys, a restless young woman who lived in a small ranch by the sea, entered the world of gastronomy with the idea of serving the few visitors who came to this remote spot in eastern Uruguay in those years. A small town with wooden ranches scattered haphazardly around the Lighthouse and the Seal Colony, a source of employment for the first permanent settlers in the area.
Between the sand dunes and the ocean, the Cape is home to a large colony of sea lions, lions, and elephant seals. It is also visited by whales, penguins, dolphins, and a great diversity of seabirds. People also arrive, and over time, more and more of them arrived, becoming an almost obligatory place for those visiting the coasts of Rocha. For years, La Perla has provided lodging and restaurant service to thousands of visitors. Gladys and Alfredo (better known as Machaco) grew alongside the place, turning it into a landmark within the destination.
Times changed, tourism changed, Cabo grew, and La Perla also had to evolve. Starting in 2014, guided by the second generation of the family, Rosario, Gladys's daughter, and her husband Gustavo began a different journey in search of excellence. Going against the grain of what seemed to be the destination's trend, they set their goal of having a boutique hotel and a first-class restaurant. You can Google the results.
